In addition to our conferences, workshops, reading groups, and learning communities, we also offer individual pedagogical support. We have helped individual instructors respond to difficult situations, revise assignments, create syllabi, draft teaching philosophy statements, and learn from students about what is working well in a course and what could make the course even better. As can be seen in Figure 9, we have facilitated 103 instructional consultations, 15 mid-semester student feedback sessions, and 5 classroom observations in the last year. Figure 10 reports the number of unique faculty receiving this support, as well as their distribution across disciplinary divisions. Although faculty from each school are equally engaged with our events, we could increase the reach of these individual consultative services to our graduate and professional school faculty.
Our new Director of Research has begun to engage with faculty to launch research on teaching innovations being used at Wake. Since her arrival in December, she has worked with a biology faculty member to design a study examining the impact of active learning and reflection on attitudes towards science and worked with an engineering faculty member to investigate whether the use of local environmental problems will increase interest in engineering among first-year students. We look forward to engaging with more faculty in the scholarship of teaching and learning in the coming year.
The CAT operates three grant funds to support instructors, researchers, and organizational partners as they develop their teaching, advance pedagogical knowledge, and contribute to a culture of teaching excellence on campus. After a year of travel restrictions, applications for these grants returned in 2021-2022, and we distributed over $2,300 to individual and department grant recipients.
